The driver was heading north on South Washington Street when for unknown reasons his car went off the roadway and struck a utility pole. Thomas sustained extensive injuries but lived long enough to make it to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her wounds.
The police did not state whether or not Whitfield sustained any wound, but Capt. Joseph DiRenzo said that the man is not facing any immediate charge. He added that alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both, are not factors in the tragic crash.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation with Officer Thomas Vigorito and Detective Christiaan Grunewald, taking point. The Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction experts are assisting them with the investigation.
Solo-vehicle crashes aren’t uncommon and happen for several reasons ranging from human errors, mechanical defaults, animal sightings, to adverse conditions on the roadway. Those involved in this type of accident are to remain calm, call for help, and file an accident report as soon as practicable.
