The man died in February after a driver, identified as Paul Joseph Garcia, 24, struck him with a 2014 Ford Focus. The preliminary accident report containing witness accounts revealed that Cagle was pushing a shopping cart near Slaughter Lane when the suspect struck him.

The deceased went through the windshield of the Ford, and his mangled body landed in the passenger seat. The police said that the man had severe head trauma, and some extremities from his body detached from the force of the collision. They ended up in the car and on the roadway.
The witness accounts also alleged that rather than stopping and calling the authorities, Garcia drove a mile and a half to South Austin Beer Garden. The young man then reportedly exited the car and walked calmly into the garden.
When police arrived at the latter, they took the suspect into custody. He is currently charged with intoxication manslaughter, causing an accident involving injury, and the traffic offense of driving with a mangled corpse for a mile and half.
The court affidavit showed that Garcia had Cagle’s blood on him when the police apprehended him. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) is assisting the APD in investigating the type of alcohol the suspect consumed before the crash.
