Tyler Orlandini, 24, of Wood River, Illinois, has filed a lawsuit against several oil refineries because he believes their toxic chemicals gave him acute lymphocytic leukemia, a type of blood cancer.
Orlandini’s lawsuit claims that several of the oil refineries did not take precautions to avoid toxic leaks and chemicals being released into the air and ground.

His blood cancer is caused by benzene, which is one of the toxic chemicals that the refineries reportedly released. During the time that Orlandini believes the chemicals were released, he lived in the nearby area.
Benzene is an industrial chemical that is known to cause cancer in humans. Exposure to this toxic chemical can cause long-term negative health effects. Individuals can suffer from benzene exposure after living or working near industrial facilities, such as oil refineries.
Orlandini’s lawsuit has 10 counts, each of which is requesting no less than $50,000 in damages. Some of the counts include shortened life expectancy, mental anguish, lifelong medical treatment, and medical bills.
Orlandini is suing several companies with the help of personal attorney Chris Dysart. The companies that Orlandini is pressing suit against are Conophillips, Phillips 66, Shell, BP Products, Apex, Premcor, Clark, Atlantic Richfield, Valero, Equilon, Turtle Wax, and Sinclair.
Orlandini says he also used automotive products from Turtle Wax, which have benzene in them. His lawsuit is also targeting the Hartford Terminal, which stores petroleum and ethanol products. These products also contain benzene in them.
