Authorities believe that the plane crashed because the weather conditions were not right for flying. According to Jack Campbell, sheriff of Sangamon County, the plane’s instruments were also malfunctioning before the plane crashed.
After the instruments malfunctioned, the pilot attempted to land at the Springfield airport. However, the plane crashed in a field. On its way to the ground, it narrowly missed two nearby houses.
When the plane landed, it burst into flames. The fire was so hot that no one could go near the plane until firefighters got the flames under control.
The Rochester Police Department was the first to arrive at the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration then took control of the area. Other first responders on the scene included the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, Springfield Police, and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office.
The plane had taken off from Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport in Florida. It stopped in Alabama around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday for gas.
Cinda Edwards was a Sangamon County coroner, while Frank Edwards was a former mayor of Springfield. They were Springfield residents. Evans lived in Glenarm. A dog was also on the plane and died, according to Campbell.
