Mr. Boyd was snowmobiling with a friend on the backside of Aspen Mountain and fell behind. When his friend realized he had fallen behind and went back to check on him, the friend discovered the tragic incident.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
According to Aspen Daily News:
Boyd had been riding with a friend who was on a separate snowmobile, Benjamin said. When the friend noticed that Boyd’s snowmobile had fallen behind, he went back to check on him and discovered the accident, Benjamin said.
“It appears [Boyd] ran off the road and crashed,” he said, adding that Boyd’s friend did not witness the actual accident.
An X Games-related party was being held at the Sundeck at the time of the crash, Benjamin added.
The back side of Aspen Mountain is popular with snowmobilers and other backcountry recreationalists.
In the official news release, the sheriff’s office stated that the Aspen Fire Department and Aspen Ambulance District were also on the scene and assisted with the accident.
