The man who deliberately crashed a relative’s car into the wall of a fitness center in the La Mirada area of California would be going away for several years. On Tuesday, July 21st, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that 34-year-old Sergio Reyes of Whittier received nine years sentence to state prison.
The sentence came immediately after the man pleaded no contest to one count of assault with a deadly weapon — an automobile — on Monday, July 19th. Facts from the car accident report showed that on March 19th, 2019, Reyes drove to Crunch Fitness in the 12800-block of Valley Avenue.

The gym had terminated the man’s membership a month earlier for behavior described as inappropriate. Angered by the revocation, he drove the car through the center’s window, nearly hitting an employee behind the reception desk. Deputy District Attorney Robert Villa said that Reyes fled the scene after the incident, but was arrested shortly after.
Since his arrest, the man remained in custody, and the DA’s office did not state if the court took the time he spent locked up into account during the sentencing. There is no additional information.
Under California laws, a vehicular assault or assault with a deadly weapon occurs when a person uses a car, truck, or another automobile to cause physical injury to another person. The offender is liable to jail time, a fine, and would make restitution in some cases.
