Both Barton and Bartlett at about noon Wednesday were driving in opposite directions on FM 487, authorities reported. Bartlett’s vehicle drifted across the centerline, crashing head-on into Barton’s pickup truck, according to car accident reports.
Barton was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services workers. Barton’s passenger, identified in car accident reports only as a 30-year-old woman, and Bartlett were taken via air ambulance to a trauma center for treatment of serious injuries.
Authorities said Bartlett succumbed to her wounds Thursday. A condition report for the other woman wasn’t immediately available.
Investigators haven’t said what they believe led Bartlett to drift into oncoming traffic. They have not said whether they suspect other factors, such as speed or intoxication, contributed to the incident.
The event remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Barton’s friends and loved ones posted multiple tributes to social media.
“You’re the strongest woman I know, and you’ve taught me to be that strong woman I know I can be,” one friend wrote.
A person who said he was Barton’s husband described her as an animal lover who created a Facebook page with the mission of reuniting lost dogs with their owners.
“She felt (every) animal deserved a happy home and a place to feel safe in,” the man wrote.
