The Midland County Sheriff’s Department reported that Mecheme at about 10:50 p.m. Monday was driving his pickup truck east on West Brooks Road when he lost control of the vehicle. Mechem drifted off the roadway and went into a ditch, causing the truck to flip, car accident reports state.
Mechem was not wearing his seatbelt when the vehicle overturned, according to authorities. Car accident reports do not say whether he was ejected from the pickup truck.
Mechem was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
A passenger in Mechem’s vehicle, a 38-year-old Midland man whom authorities did not publicly identify, said he was not injured.
It wasn’t clear from car accident reports whether factors like inattentive driving, speed or intoxication are believed to have led to Mechem losing control of his vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.
Mechem’s friends posted tributes to him on Facebook after news of his death became public.
“You were a great father, son, brother, uncle and friend,” one friend wrote.
“Hard to believe (you’re) gone brother,” wrote another acquaintance. “Fly high now.”

It is so sad to see someone so young pass away, especially when it may have been avoided if he had worn a seatbelt at the time of the accident. It is a sad loss for the family and friends of the young man, especially since he was a father. I hope they find out what caused the accident soon to give the family peace of mind.
