The driver failed to stop, making an eastbound turn outside Jacksonville city limits. The deputies chased the vehicle, but gave up after the motorist turned off the car’s lights shortly after passing the city limits.
Sheriff Mike Carmody said that he believes the driver lost control of the vehicle at some point and struck a utility pole near the railroad tracks near Witty Road. Gordley, a Jacksonville resident, died at the crash site.
The police located the male driver of the wrecked car walking along the road and took him to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield to treat non-life-threatening injuries. The motorist’s identity remains unknown.
Carmody also believes that alcohol might have played a role in the occurrence, adding that the driver might get issued tickets after the investigation. The crash led to the closure of Old Route 36, while the Illinois State Police troopers performed accident reconstruction and cleared the damaged car’s debris from the roadway.
