The events that led to the incident began with a 2005 Toyota Corolla and a tractor-trailer traveling at the same time on the right lane of the southbound freeway. 22-year-old Melquesided Garcia, the driver of the smaller vehicle, was allegedly distracted and traveling at an unsafe speed.
The young man failed to notice the trailer going at a slower speed and rear-ended the big-rig. The CHP said that the driver of the bigger vehicle, identified as a 61-year-old Sunland resident, Khosrow Petrossian, didn’t sustain any wounds. His passenger also escaped unscathed.
Abanathit, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Toyota, and Puerco, sustained minor to moderate wounds, with the latter having a head injury. The accident reports also showed that Garcia sustained non-life-threatening wounds, and a 10-month-old baby in the back seat wasn’t injured.
The medics took the quartet, who are all residents of Orland, to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment and checkup. The authorities are still investigating the accident and will provide an update at a later time.
