The accident took place on March 14 along State Highway 153. At the time of the accident, police reported that the roadway was wet. They are not sure at present if that was a factor in the accident.
According to the police, a 2004 Ford Explorer was traveling east on State Highway 153 around 7:48 a.m. At the same time, a 2011 Chrysler 200 was driving westbound on State Highway 153. The two vehicles collided into one another at a curved point in the road.

The driver of the Ford has been identified as 18-year-old Fernando Jose Vega. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He was taken to North Runnels hospital and was said to be stable, but with significant injuries.
The driver of the Chrysler was identified as 29-year-old Jose Enrique Nieves Osorio. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Police indicated that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
His body was taken to Abilene Professional Services. An autopsy will likely be performed.
The police have not released any other plausible causes for the accident other than the weather could be what caused the accident. At this time, there have not been any indications that either driver is suspected of being under the influence.
This accident is currently being considered an ongoing investigation. No updates were available regarding the status of Vega or his injuries.
