A spokesman for the TDPS revealed that Mulato was one out of four teenagers traveling in a pickup truck. An unidentified 18-year-old was behind the wheel of the vehicle, and the investigators noted that the individual was on a cell phone. The distraction caused the motorist to go off the roadway and roll.
Mulato sustained extensive wounds that he succumbed to at the scene, and the first responders pronounced him. An 18-year-old passenger suffered severe wounds while a 19-year-old suffered non-life threatening injuries. The driver was also injured and currently in stable condition.
The TDPS said that the crash remains under investigation, and they will provide an update when they have more information.
Several reports of car accidents show that distracted driving is a leading cause of motor vehicle accidents. Eating when behind the wheel, conversing, calling, and texting are distractions that drivers should desist from for their safety, their passengers, and other road users.
