Authorities on Wednesday responded to a report of a plane that fallen to the ground less than one mile away from the airport. Emergency responders located the crash site at about 4:40 p.m. that day, according to accident reports.

Both occupants of the six-seat, single-engine Cessna plane, pilot John Scull and passenger Carolyn Scull, were killed in the crash, troopers said. Accident reports available Thursday list few details about the circumstances leading to the crash, including whether investigators believe user error or mechanical issues were to blame.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will oversee the investigation going forward. The federal agencies will collect wreckage and interviews from potential witnesses in an effort to find a cause for the fatal crash.

Detailed NTSB investigations often stretch out over months or even years before final accident reports are released.

The state agency was assisted at the scene by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the Center Police Department, the Center Fire Department and Allegiance Emergency Medical Services, troopers told media outlets Thursday afternoon.
