Investigators said a man died Friday night in a single-vehicle crash in Cherokee County.
Fifty-seven-year-old Joe R. White, a resident of Jacksonville, died at the scene of the wreck late Friday night a few miles outside of New Summerfield, the Texas Department of Public Safety reported Sunday. Car accident reports do not list any additional injuries, and White’s was the only vehicle involved in the incident.

According to troopers from the state agency, White at about 10:30 p.m. was driving on FM 856 about five miles south of New Summerfield when he lost control of his vehicle while approaching a curve. White’s vehicle then slid off the roadway, car accident reports state.
The vehicle continued sliding sideways until it struck a tree near the door on the driver’s side, authorities reported. The crash then pushed the vehicle back into the roadway, where it finally came to a rest in a lane of traffic, according to car accident reports.
Emergency medical services personnel were dispatched to the scene of the crash. However, a local judge determined While had succumbed to his injuries and his body was transported to a Jacksonville funeral home, car accident reports state.
Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety continue to investigate the wreck. It was unclear from car accident reports available Sunday whether factors like inattentive driving, speed or intoxication are though to have contributed to the incident.
