Two people ended up hospitalized after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Henning Road and US Route 136 in Vermillion County, Illinois, on Wednesday, July 29th. The Illinois State Patrol identified the two as Jerry Paxton, 78, of Henning, and Teri L. Reffet, 54, of Milford.
Facts from the accident report showed that the events leading to the collision began with Paxton. At about 3:51 p.m., the man drove northbound on Henning in a 2018 silver Ford Fiesta. He stopped at a stop sign and pulled into the front of a 2017 black Ford Fusion driven by Reffet.

The second driver was eastbound on US-R136. The ISP said that the Fusion struck the Fiesta on the driver’s side door, leaving Paxton with significant injuries. Medics used an air ambulance to transport the victim to an area hospital for treatment. Reffett suffered minor wounds and received treatment at a local hospital. The investigators cited the first driver for failure to yield.
Under the Illinois Vehicle Code, when two cars are entering an intersection at the same time from different roadways, the driver on the left must yield the right of way to the car on the right. Failure to follow that rule can lead to traffic collisions and cause a multi-vehicle accident.
Common types of failure to yield offenses are failure to yield to a flashing red or yellow light, failure to yield to a funeral procession, and failure to yield to an emergency police fire or ambulance vehicle. Others are failure to yield to a pedestrian walking in a crosswalk and failure to yield to a car exiting a private driveway or alley.
