Accident reports supplied by the LAPD showed that Stokes was crossing the roadway southbound at the intersection of West Vernon Avenue and South Harvard Boulevard. A black Honda Civic approaching at a high rate of speed suddenly ran him over. It happened just before 7:40 p.m.
First responders found the elderly man on the roadway with severe injuries and transported him to an area hospital.
Meanwhile, the operator of the Honda failed to stop and assist the victim but fled at a high rate of speed. A second motorist who witnessed the crash went after the suspect and caught up with the vehicle at Normandie Avenue.
When the witness confronted the car’s occupants, a female passenger reportedly exited the vehicle with an open bottle of liquor and promised to return to the crash site. However, the car sped away in the opposite direction as soon as the passenger returned inside.
The LAPD is on the lookout for the suspects, believed to be two females. They described the vehicle as a Honda Civic with major damage to the front windshield and hood. The Honda’s license plate sports “394” as its last three numbers.
Los Angeles police officers urged anyone with helpful information on the suspects to contact the LA Regional Crime Stoppers.
