The vehicle entered the intersection, and a truck operated by McKown struck it on its rear driver’s side. The impact caused the engine to spin 180 degrees and roll on its side. The suspect’s car sustained significant front-end damage, and medics took him to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Three firefighters on the fire engine suffered minor wounds and received treatment in a hospital. The ISP determined that McKown was impaired at the time of the collision, and cited him for DUI, disobedience of a traffic control signal, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
The suspect was also cited for illegal transportation of alcohol and electronic communication devices prohibited while driving. The investigators closed the affected roadway for several hours while they cleared the scene and reopened it at about 5:30 a.m.
Accidents of this nature are avoidable if drivers operate their vehicles without impairment and obey the road’s rules. It would also help prevent adverse legal consequences and the penalties attached.
