Authorities said Yousif was riding his bike in the 8200 block of Waukegan Road at about 2:40 p.m. Thursday. When he attempted to cross the road at Cleveland Avenue, he was struck by a pickup truck that was northbound on Waukegan Road, according to car accident reports.
Witnesses reportedly told investigators that Yousif pulled “directly” in front of the oncoming truck. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 6 p.m. Thursday.
The truck driver, identified in car accident reports only as an 18-year-old Niles man, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, authorities said. No charges or citations in connection to the incident have been announced by police.
The incident remains under investigation by the Niles Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities have not said whether they suspect the involvement of contributing factors, such as excessive speed or inattentive driving.
However, police did tell local medial outlets that the truck driver did not show signs of intoxication.
Since the crash, local parents have launched a campaign to install traffic signals at the intersection of Waukegan Road and Cleveland Avenue, the latter of which is designated as a bike route.
