The authorities said the fatal crash happened precisely at about 9:19 a.m. at the intersection of West Kent and South Magruder roads. Heinzelmann was driving a grey 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on SMR when he disobeyed a stop sign and struck the side of a white 2016 Kenworth dump truck.
The latter was driven by 61-year-old Roy Hall from Coleman and heading west on WKR. The sheriff’s office said that the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and his front airbag deployed. Heinzelmann sustained severe wounds that landed him in the hospital.
The driver of the dump truck had minor injuries, and the medics took him to Midland Medical Center-Midland for treatment. The police requested a toxicology test to determine if drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both played a role in the crash.
The accident report also showed that the MCSO had the help of the Michigan State Police and their 3rd District Accident Reconstruction Team. The St. Louis Fire Rescue, MidMichigan EMS, and Flight Care also assisted.
