The victim was found already dead in a ditch, and his body was transported to the coroner’s office. The officers then started gathering debris from the scene to help them identify the vehicle involved in the crash.
While still at it, a witness approached the officers and told them of a disabled vehicle in the parking lot of a gas station. The witness said a man was looking at a Chevrolet pickup and assessing the damage.
Herman said the deputies went to confirm the information, and immediately, Perez-Gallegos saw them, he fled into a bathroom. They later arrested the man and identified him as an alien from Mexico who would have escaped had his car not broken down.
The officers also found a young child in the damaged Chevrolet, and they took Perez-Gallegos blood sample for a blood alcohol content test. The latter showed that the man was intoxicated while driving.
Perez-Gallegos is still in custody at the Harris County Jail. He is charged with failing to stop and render aid and driving while intoxicated with a child passenger.
