The driver of the Dodge was later identified as 20-year-old Hanna McCuan of Redding. After striking Smith’s Kia, McCuan swerved and went up onto the curb. She ended up hitting a utility pole during the accident.
Reports indicated that McCuan admitted to police she was distracted by her phone when the accident occurred, and that was why she ran the red light at the intersection. It was not clear if McCuan received injuries as a result of the accident.
Smith had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not specified in the news release.
The report did not indicate if either of the women were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The report also did not state if McCuan had received any charges or citations in conjunction with the collision.
There was not any indication that McCuan was under the influence at the time of the accident. Distracted driving charges in the state of California carries a $20 fine for a first offense and $50 for each offense after that.
The accident investigation is currently still under investigation.
