The CPD started pursuing the 22-year-old man around 8:15 p.m. after sighting him in a dark-colored Jeep near 115th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. At 9400-block of South Union Avenue, the officers attempted to stop the suspect, but he took off again, driving into Irving Park Road on the North Side.
The man crashed the Jeep a short while after and stole a 2016 Nissan SUV from a nearby gas station. He continued driving on Irving at about 100 miles per hour, and the police kept pursuing him with their sirens activated. At this point, the squad car slammed into Martinez and went on to hit a Hummer stopped at the red light.
The 62-year-old driver of the Hummer, and his two female passengers aged 29 and 44, sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Two unnamed officers also suffered non-life threatening wounds.
The suspect kept going until he crashed the Nissan into the pole in Bridgeport at the South Side. The report showed that the man tried to flee, but the police caught him in the 800-block of West Pershing Road and arrested him. Officers then took him to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.
Area Three Detectives, Major Accidents Unit, and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating.
