The officials of Cal Fire on Sunday, June 21st, released the name of a fire captain who died in a hiking accident near Big Sur, California. They disclosed the victim’s name as David Lutz, 33; he worked with the San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit.
The accident report released on Wednesday, June 17th, stated that the man passed away from injuries sustained during an off-duty hiking trip with his family. Lutz was two weeks away from his 34th birthday, and he was visiting Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

The details of the accident are not immediately available, but Captain Jordan Motta, the victim’s colleague said his death was a significant loss for Cal Fire. The fireman said Lutz recently returned to El Granada Fire Station as the captain of Engine 41. He was described as a passionate firefighter who saw service beyond answering calls, to training fellow firefighters.
The victim was a native of Los Gatos; he had his early life in Los Corralitos and started his career as a volunteer firefighter. Lutz was married with three children and was expecting baby number four. The San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit raised a memorial fund of over $40 000 for the fireman’s family.
