Lufkin police dispatched officers to the location after receiving calls of a reckless driver on Old Union Road. Callers reported that the driver was traveling at a speed above 100 mph, in a green-colored, single-cab pickup.
Investigations showed that the driver, Darrell Trent Williams, 47, of Lufkin, was northbound on Old Union before negotiating a turn onto Pershing Avenue. On approaching the road’s intersection with Bynum, the motorist failed to slow down for the congested traffic. As a result, he slammed into the rear of a waiting Kia. The impact forced the Kia into the back of a Mitsubishi directly in front of it, which was also stopped for traffic.
Williams suffered critical injuries in the accident. Emergency responders transported him to a hospital in the area, where he eventually gave in to his injuries.
Two occupants in the Kia, including the driver, Gale Sibley, and a passenger Betty Phillips suffered injuries and received transportation to an area hospital. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. A second passenger, Neva Smith, went unscathed. Officers did not report any injuries to the Mitsubishi’s occupants.
Detectives are looking into the case to determine why Williams was unable to stop for the line of traffic.
