One of the minors and the driver of the Infiniti, Francisco Carreno Jr., 34, of Chicago, were trapped in the vehicle, and three people stopped on the roadway to help bring them out of the wrecked car. At about 12:35 a.m., a 2017 Nissan Sentra, driven by Sabrina R. Johnson, 45, of Chicago, failed to slow down and struck the three people rendering help.
Melton was one of them, and he passed away at the scene. The state police said that the medics took the other two, identified as Ezekiel J. Williams, 25, and Corey Seifer, 25, both of Chicago, to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The five people whom they tried to help suffered non-life-threatening wounds and the paramedics also took them to the hospital.
The occurrence led to the closure of the roadway from about 12:40 a.m. to 6:15 a.m. after the ISP concluded their preliminary investigation. There is no information on whether or not Johnson suffered any injury, and the inquiry into the crash remains active.
