West was reportedly driving beyond the speed limit when the car hydroplaned after crossing a puddle of water. The vehicle crashed into a cement pillar, and the passenger side, where Torres sat, sustained extensive damage.
The first responders took the three occupants of the Ford to the University Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The young woman succumbed to her wounds despite the best effort of doctors, but the driver and the baby, who had minor injuries, survived.
The police added that they believe Torres and West had a relationship but did not release additional details.
Single-vehicle crashes, as seen in accident reports, occur for various reasons ranging from the negligence of drivers to unforeseen road conditions. Traffic officials advise motorists driving on wet roads to maintain the speed limit as rain and snow leaves the roadway slippery.
Drivers should also use tires for slippery roadways, and give a considerable distance between themselves and other vehicles to allow them to stop in time to avoid a collision. If avoidable, don’t drive in adverse weather; wait until it becomes favorable.
