The accident occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 146 at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 1765 in Texas City. Garnica’s girlfriend, Destiny Wallace, was the passenger in the vehicle.
The accident did not involve any other vehicles and from what they can gather from his girlfriend, Garnica simply lost control of the vehicle and hit the utility pole. Garnica was not seriously injured in the accident.
Wallace stayed in the car, surviving the accident. When she was taken to the emergency room, she found out that she is currently pregnant with Garnica’s child.
Although the accident did not kill Garnica, when he got out of the vehicle, he ended up touching a power line. The line electrocuted him, which is the cause of death. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
First responders shared that when involved in an accident it is best to stay in the vehicle if there are any downed power lines. Even though the accident may cause panic and the first instinct is to get out of the situation, you are safer in your car than you are outside of it in that situation.
Once they arrive at the scene they can assess if the wires are still considered “hot” and contact the power company to cut the electricity to them and make the scene safer. The tires create a grounding effect, which is why staying in the vehicle is safer.
The investigation of the accident is still ongoing and there has been no indication as to what caused Garnica to lose control of the vehicle in the first place.
