When police arrived, they found Diffin lying on the road. The baby was still in the stroller, unharmed. The driver of an early 1990s model Jeep remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with police.
Diffen was taken via ambulance to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. They did not specify her injuries, only that they were severe enough to be considered fatal.
The driver of the Jeep told police that Diffin had been walking in the road, not in a crosswalk. As the Jeep was driving northbound, they did not see Diffin in the road and was unable to avoid colliding with her and the stroller.
A lot of speculation has come about in the wake of this accident. According to someone close to the family, Diffin was not out alone walking with a stroller that late at night. The family was coming back from an outing. The other members had made it safely across the street before tragedy striking.
Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be a factor in this accident.
The family has a GoFundMe page set up to help the baby and her father with expenses during this time.
The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing.
