The California Highway Patrol officers reported that the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident on Wednesday, June 17.
The occurrence played out shortly before 9 p.m. on Interstate 80, a few miles from Watt Avenue. A CHP motorcycle officer suffered injuries in the collision and ended up hospitalized. CHP officials confirmed in a press statement that the injured patrol officer is now in stable condition, but still receiving treatment at the hospital.

According to the reports, the motorcycle officer was observing a traffic break on the roadside, on the eastbound I-80 as a result of a hazard on the highway. The driver, identified as Emmanuel Briones-Rodriguez, a 36-year-old resident of Sacramento, was driving past in his vehicle and struck the officer. The lawman, whose name remained undisclosed in the reports, suffered severe injuries in the collision. Emergency responders conveyed the victim to a hospital to commence treatment.
Meanwhile, Briones-Rodriguez pulled over and stayed at the scene of the encounter until other law enforcement agents arrived. Deputies took him into custody on suspicion of DUI. The accident reports did not disclose his level of intoxication, or if he underwent field sobriety tests before the arrest.
