Preliminary investigations showed that the motorist, identified as Eleanor Leake, a Calistoga resident, was northbound on Highway 29 in a 2019 Chevrolet Impala. For reasons still under investigation, the woman drove her vehicle off the roadway and collided with a tree. The impact caused severe damages to the Chevrolet, leaving Leake critically injured.
The emergency response crew summoned a REACH helicopter, which flew the injured woman to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment. Her condition at this time is unknown. CHP officials said Leake was traveling alone in her Chevrolet when the crash happened, and no other vehicle or pedestrian was involved in the encounter.
Detectives determined that the victim was using protective restraints at the time of the collision. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be contributing factors in the accident, which remains under investigation.
Investigators would try to establish if other factors such as speed, distracted driving, or improper lighting contributed to the accident. The CHP would communicate additional findings in the updated reports of the car accident.
