The California Office of Traffic Safety advises pedestrians to think two steps ahead of drivers for their safety. The agency notes that pedestrians who are getting killed or severely injured are people walking to work, school, and shopping centers.
The fault lies at the feet of both pedestrians and drivers, and the two sides must work together to demonstrate safe behaviors on the road, and protect themselves and those around them. Safety tips for pedestrians include wearing bright colors, avoiding dangerous behaviors like jaywalking, texting, and looking left-right-left before crossing a street.
Drivers should avoid speeding in residential, school, and business districts, yield the way to pedestrians, stop at crosswalks, and drive only when sober. Additionally, drive with headlights on at night, and during bad weather, and back out of driveways cautiously.
