In an interview with the police, the suspect admitted his guilt. He said he believed the vessel docked for nefarious purposes. The tampered train ran through a series of barriers and rested 250 feet from the USNS Mercy.
The crash did not injure anyone, and the vessel was not damaged. However, the train leaked fuel, and authorities had to conduct a hazardous clean-up. A California Highway Patrol officer apprehended Moreno as he attempted to flee the scene.
Moreno is now facing a criminal complaint with one federal count of train wrecking. The offense carries up to 20 years beyond bars at the maximum, and a convicted person will do time at a federal prison.
The suspect had a detention hearing fixed for Wednesday, but upon his request, it was moved. The hearing will take place on Friday, April 3rd, and the suspect will get arraigned on Thursday, May 7th.
A person who causes an accident has a right to legal representation. Auto accident attorneys in California will advise the person on his or her rights, liability, and possible defense.
