As Jones was driving through the intersection of the Paradise Valley road and Munda road, he tried to negotiate a turn without sufficiently reducing his speed. He consequently lost control of the vehicle. The Mercedes-Benz left the roadway and collided with a canyon.
The incident occurred late at night and was reported to the authorities at around 1:45 a.m. Once paramedics reached the scene of the crash, Lavoile was rushed to the Scripps Mercy Hospital. However, attempts to revive her failed and she died at the hospital nearly an hour later.
When the law enforcement personnel conducted on-site investigations, they found Jones hiding in the bushes close to the crash scene. The police arrested him and charged him with hit-and-run causing death as well as four counts of vehicular manslaughter. In an appearance on Thursday, Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. His bail has been set at $1 million.
