Officials gathered that the woman was headed southbound on Loop 410 before the crash. Police said the highway traffic began to slow down as she approached the scene of an earlier crash near Highway 151.
The female motorist swerved her SUV to the left, thereby smashing into a patrol car stopped along the highway. The accident reports affirmed that the officer operating the struck vehicle was at the time attempting to divert the built-up traffic.
Hernandez-Benavidez remained trapped in her SUV following the crash until an emergency response team arrived and pulled her out. She suffered injuries of undisclosed nature, and an ambulance transported her to a local hospital. Her condition at this time is unknown.
The four juveniles traveling alongside the female motorist went unhurt, while the officer involved suffered minor injuries.
Detectives believe impairment was a factor in the traffic collision. They charged Hernandez-Benavidez with four counts of driving while under the influence with a child.
