The woman sustained severe injuries, and medics airlifted her to a hospital in Deer Valley to treat non-life-threatening injuries. However, medical personnel later determined the victim to be paralyzed in her lower extremities.
Enriquez said that the children in the Hummer and two passengers in the minivan also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment in a hospital. Espin tried fleeing the scene on foot, but officers apprehended him about a fourth of a mile from the crash site.
The police booked the suspect into the Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, endangerment, leaving the scene of an injury accident, and aggravated DUI. There is no additional information.
Under Arizona law, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a criminal offense. Drivers must maintain a blood alcohol content less than .08%. To convict a person of the crime, the court would consider his or her BAC at the time of the occurrence, whether the offender has a prior DUI conviction and the presence or lack of minors in the vehicle.
