The coroner disclosed that an autopsy showed that Young passed away from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the collision. He did not disclose the facts leading to the occurrence, but the accident report revealed that the victim was the only occupant of the crossover-type vehicle.
Jeff DeGraff, a spokesperson for Norfolk Southern, said in a press release that their trains have forward-facing cameras that record events. He added that they would share the footage with local law enforcement if requested or necessary to help piece together what led to the occurrence.
Springfield Police Department Deputy Chief Joshua Stuenkel said that they are still waiting for the footage on Tuesday morning. There is no additional information, and the investigation remains active.
Auto-train collisions are not common, but they have fatal consequences when they occur. Like other types of accidents, it is preventable if drivers and locomotive operators follow the rules guiding crossing of railroad tracks and safety tips. Additionally, crossing an unmarked section of a train track amounts to trespassing, and offenders will get fined.
