As Almanza was driving along the westbound lanes of I-10, he suddenly swerved right at a high rate of speed. This caused the vehicle to turn clockwise, veering across the westbound lanes. The vehicle then lost its balance and as it left the roadway to enter the shoulder, it overturned. It finally came to rest upside down.
Almanza sustained critical injuries in the crash. The incident took place in the afternoon and was reported to the authorities at around 4 p.m. By the time the first responders and paramedics reached the scene of the crash, Almanza had died of his injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
CHP continues to investigate the incident. The focus of the investigations, at this stage, is to determine what caused Almanza to suddenly veer right and cause the crash. Preliminary investigation by the CHP Blythe officers has ruled alcohol or drugs as possible causes. Subsequent accident reports may reveal if another cause, such as a medical emergency, was involved in the incident.
