The Chrysler van was headed eastbound along the I-24 Bridge. The driver of the van failed to slow down at a traffic stop and instead switched lanes. This brought the van into a collision with the Hyundai SUV. The sheer impact of the collision then crashed both vehicles into the trailer of the semi-truck.
The driver of the van was identified as Gilbert Moorman, 76, of Springfield. He was accompanied by Mary Moorman, 74, also of Springfield. Gilbert sustained serious injuries in the collision and was transported to the Lourdes Hospital. Mary was critically injured and attempts to revive her failed. She died from her injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Hyundai SUV, identified as 74-year-old Gary Moore of Brookport, had no injuries to report. The semi driver was identified as David Thatch, 56, of Parma, Missouri. Thatch suffered injuries in the crash although his injuries are reported as non-life-threatening.
Authorities shut down the eastbound lanes of the highway following the crash. The lanes remained shut for nearly four hours. Subsequent accident reports may reveal more details regarding the incident.
