The CHP dispatched officers to the area after receiving a call about a collision involving a car and a pedestrian at about 11:44 p.m. A preliminary investigation by the lawmen uncovered that Sanchez was walking in the lanes of H-99 when a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban heading south struck her.
Sanchez sustained severe wounds that claimed her life, but the unidentified driver of the vehicle did not have any injury. There is no further information at this time, and the accident remains under investigation.
Auto-pedestrian accidents are not uncommon in California, as seen in accident reports. The state’s Office of Traffic Safety notes that in 2018, 893 pedestrians died on roadways, with over 14, 000 injured.
The state has a death rate that is almost 25% higher than the national level, with no state in the US having more deaths than California. OTS believes that drivers and pedestrians must work together, and demonstrate safe behaviors on the road, to protect themselves and others around them.
