Investigators said Martinez was walking across the freeway when a northbound 2014 Chevy Silverado hit her. The impact of the collision pushed the deceased into the area between the lanes of the highway.
The woman sustained severe wounds that claimed her life at the scene, and the medics pronounced her. The CHP said the unnamed male driver of the Chevy tried to apply his brakes, but could not do so in time to avoid hitting Martinez.
The investigators did not state if the driver would get cited for the fatal accident. The investigations remain active, and there’s no additional information at this time.
Accident reports gathered by the California Office of Traffic Safety shows that an auto-pedestrian crash is a two-way street. The fault often lies with both pedestrians and drivers, and they must work together to prevent accidents and fatalities.
Safety tips by the OTC for pedestrians and drivers include wearing bright colors for visibility, avoiding dangerous road behaviors, and staying off the phone. Others are maintaining the speed limit, yielding to pedestrians, stopping at crosswalks, and looking left-right-left before crossing.
