The preliminary investigation by the police uncovered that Gates was a passenger in a red Volkswagen sedan involved in the fatal collision. The driver of the vehicle was heading west on Nees Avenue, and at the same time, a pickup truck driven by James M. Anderson, 26, was going north on Chestnut.
Anderson got to the intersection and ran a red light as the Volkswagen driver, who had a green light, attempted to turn left onto Chestnut. The act by the truck driver caused the vehicle to slam into the passenger side of the other automobile, severely injuring Gates in the process.
When the paramedics arrived, they rushed the young man to Saint Agnes Medical Center, where he passed away while undergoing treatment. The unidentified female driver of the Volkswagen sustained minor injuries, while Anderson was unscathed.
The police determined that the suspect was under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both, and took him into custody. They booked him into the Fresno County Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI, hence the top accident lawyer.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the authorities will provide an update at a later date.
