A construction zone crash on the I-80 resulted in the death of a construction worker on Wednesday, September 9. The victim was identified as Mark Pirelli, 47, of Bridgeport according to the accident reports.
Pirelli worked nearly a 100 miles from his home in Bridgeport and drove to work every day. On Wednesday, Pirelli was directing traffic at the construction zone when he was hit by a van. The collision caused critical injuries and led to his death on the scene of the accident.

According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the vehicle that hit Pirelli was a red Honda van. The driver of the van was identified as an 84-year-old male, Robert Bowen, of Macomb. The van was traveling westbound on the I-80. Less than a mile from the Illinois Route 40, the driver of the van crashed into the construction zone.
Mark Pirelli was standing next to his maintenance truck at the time. The sheer impact of the collision led to his death. Bowen didn’t sustain any significant injuries in the collision. He was taken to a local hospital where he received treatment and was released soon afterwards.
Preliminary investigation by the ISP has led the agency to issue Bowen a citation for failure to yield. No other charges have been brought against the driver as per the latest accident reports. Pirelli is survived by his wife and two daughters. His twin sister, Maria Pirelli, mourned the loss of her brother and pleaded with the drivers to be careful when driving close to construction zones.
