Gilland was crossing Meadowbrook on his ATV, while Ortiz was turning left onto the street from the Highway. Juan Quintero, a police officer, said that the 19-year-old made the turn after a traffic light signal turned green and apparently didn’t notice the ATV crossing Meadowbrook.
The Honda hit the ATV, knocking Gilland off. He wasn’t in a helmet at the time of the collision and fell on the road. He suffered blunt force trauma to his head.
Medics rushed him to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar and put him on life support. He lingered on the machine until around 3:30 AM when he passed away. Ortiz, on the other hand, sustained no injuries as a result of the crash. No additional information is available at this time.
According to officer Quintero, the collision remains under investigation. Accident reports state that the police are seeking information from anyone who witnessed the crash. Such persons can call the Riverside office of the CHP at 951-637-8000.
