Auto-bicycle accidents are not as common as other types of traffic collisions, but they record a high fatality rate due to the severe impact on the human body. Injuries sustained by the bicyclist range from minor, severe, to fatal.
They cover road rash, broken bones, fractures, ligament tears, internal bleeding, organ damage, and head injuries. The latter can be traumatic brain injury (TBI), intracranial bleeding, or concussion, and they are preventable if the bicyclist wears a fitted helmet.
Before riding, inflate tires properly, check to see if the brake works, and ride with at least one hand on the handlebars. Watch out for road hazards like broken glass, potholes, gravel, puddles, leaves, and dogs.
Avoid riding at night if possible, and wear bright colors or reflective materials to enhance visibility. Adjust the bike to fit, and the handlebar height should be at the same level as the seat.
