At about 2:45 p.m., officers located Smith at his home in the 900-block of Menlo Avenue, one block east of Vermont Avenue. The crash report disclosed that a black sedan with dealer-issued plates struck the 70-year-old woman as she crossed North Broadway at College Street.
The police said that the woman was using the crosswalk and had the “Walk” sign when the suspect’s car struck her. The victim catapulted into the air and landed on the street, causing her to suffer a brain bleed, and a broken neck, clavicle, and pelvis.
The woman is in intensive care at an undisclosed hospital. A security video released by the LAPD showed that Smith walked up to the woman while bystanders tended to her, then walked back to his car, and drove away without rendering help to her.
The police released a composite drawing of the suspect, describing him as an African-American male between 35 and 40-year-old, about 6-feet 4 inches tall, and weighing about 50 pounds. They added that he had short braids, tattoos on his arm, and the number “1” inked on the left side of his face.
