According to the Center for Disease Control, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of teens’ death in the United States. Collision risk is higher among male teens between 16 and 19 than any other age group and more than female teenagers.
Teens between the age of 16 and 19 are nearly three times more likely to crash than drivers aged 20 and older. The category also covers teenagers driving with teen passengers and newly licensed teens who have little or no experience.
Common causes of accidents involving teens are speeding, lack of seat belt use, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Under the California Vehicle Code, those below the age of 21 must drive with less than .01% blood alcohol concentration. Failure to obey this rule is a criminal offense and carries severe consequences.
