Preliminary investigations indicated that the vehicle, driven by 24-year-old Bryant Martinez, of Murrieta, was traveling south on I-15. The driver failed to slow down as he approached slowing traffic near an intersection. As a result, his 2014 Toyota Tacoma rear-ended a 2004 Honda Accord traveling in front of him. The impact of the collision forced the Honda to plow into a 2017 Ford Fusion from behind.
Bryant suffered minor injuries in the accident. A seven-month-old child traveling as a backseat passenger in his Tacoma also received injuries. Medical personnel transported the infant to Rancho Spring Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Meanwhile, the two occupants of the Honda sustained severe injuries. An Ambulance conveyed them to inland Valley Medical Center, where the 26-year-old male passenger eventually passed away from his injuries. The condition of the 22-year-old female motorist at this time is unknown. The occupant of the Fusion went unscathed.
Investigators determined that Martinez was driving under the influence of alcohol when the crash happened. They detained him on charges of DUI causing injuries, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, murder, and willful harm to a child.
Martinez remains held at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center, French Valley, and would require representation by a drunk driving attorney.
