The CHP said that Diaz sideswiped another vehicle and exited Newhall at about 90 miles per hour, for unknown reasons. The victim then failed to negotiate a curve on the roadway correctly and continued straight without braking. She traversed dry drainage dirt, struck a dirt embankment and rolled over.
The accident report stated that the impact launched the woman’s Toyota about 150-feet before impacting the dirt field to the north of the off-ramp. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Diaz trapped inside her wrecked car. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel extricated the victim from the vehicle and declared her dead.
The investigators ruled speed as a primary factor in the crash. They are awaiting the coroner’s toxicology result to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The accident remains under investigation, and witnesses can contact the CHP Newhall Area Office on the listed line.
