The investigators said that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Murio McEachin, 51, of North Highlands, exited H-49 onto South Auburn Street. He failed to stop at the exit ramp, causing the collision. The vehicle went on to crash into the wall of the school, trapping Breault in between.
The woman sustained fatal wounds while McEachin made it alive to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with severe injuries. The CHP does not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The accident remains under investigation.
Auto-pedestrian collisions are not uncommon in California, and it is more common on its roadways than in any other part of the United States. Mitigating the factors that cause this type of accident is possible if drivers and pedestrians work together by practicing safe road habits and making safety a priority.
Pedestrians should never jaywalk, cross outside marked crosswalks, or walk on busy roads. Drivers should maintain the speed limit in school districts, and always yield the way to pedestrians.
