The girl told the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office that she and her mother had been walking. When her mother couldn’t walk any further, she left her to find help.
They believe that the little girl wandered for miles before being found. Despite some scratches and some ticks from the woods, she was unharmed. The girl is only 8 years old.
Besides troopers for Liberty County, Sheriff Steve Sikes called in more resources for the search. Long County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Midway Police Department, and Chatham County’s helicopter were used in the search.
It was finally the Georgia State Patrol who came in with a helicopter with heat-sensing capabilities that found the woman. She was only two to three miles from the original crash site.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities do not suspect foul play as a factor in the accident. They did not mention if drugs and/or alcohol may have been a factor. They are currently still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
According to the girl, she and her mother had been wandering in the woods for at least two days before being found.
